What Is Basement Plumbing Service?
Basement plumbing service includes repairing, installing, replacing, and maintaining the water-supply and drainage components located in a basement.
These systems may carry water to bathrooms, laundry machines, utility sinks, water heaters, and other fixtures. They also move wastewater through floor drains, fixture drains, branch lines, and the building’s main drainage system.
Basement plumbing service may be needed for:
- Basement bathrooms
- Toilets, sinks, showers, and bathtubs
- Laundry rooms
- Washing machine connections
- Utility and laundry sinks
- Basement floor drains
- Water-supply pipes
- Drain and sewer lines
- Shutoff valves
- Sump pumps
- Water heater connections
- Plumbing rough-ins
- Finished basement renovations
- Secondary suites
- Mechanical and utility rooms
- Commercial basement areas
A professional plumbing assessment can help determine whether the system needs cleaning, repair, replacement, or a new installation.
Common Signs You Need Basement Plumbing Service
You may need a basement plumber if:
- A basement floor drain is backing up
- Water collects around a pipe or fixture

- The basement has unexplained moisture
- Plumbing connections show corrosion

Basement Plumbing Repair vs Basement Plumbing Installation
Basement plumbing repair focuses on restoring an existing pipe, drain, fixture, valve, or connection. Basement plumbing installation is needed when adding new fixtures, developing a basement, or changing the plumbing layout.
Basement plumbing repair may be suitable when:
- An exposed pipe is leaking
- A basement drain is blocked
- A toilet or sink is not working properly
- A laundry connection is leaking
- A shutoff valve is damaged
- A sump pump has stopped working
- An existing plumbing component can be restored
Basement plumbing installation may be needed when:
- A new basement bathroom is being added
- A laundry room is being installed
- A utility sink needs plumbing
- New water-supply lines are required
- New drain lines are needed
- A fixture is being relocated
- An unfinished basement is being developed
- Existing rough-in plumbing needs modification
Repair is suitable when an existing basement plumbing component can be restored. Installation is needed when adding, replacing, upgrading, or relocating fixtures, pipes, drains, valves, or appliance connections.

- Prevent recurring floor-drain backups
- Protect finished basement materials

- Reduce unnecessary water waste
- Support sump pump performance
- Identify deteriorated plumbing components
- Prepare the basement for renovations
- Reduce the risk of unexpected plumbing problems

Mike went above and beyond when my sump pump stopped working during the heavy rains we've been getting in Edmonton. He walked me through how to safely test it over the phone late at night, gave me a practical tip to keep the water away from the walls until morning, and even tracked down a replacement pump during a city-wide shortage. First thing in the morning he was at my door and had it sorted. This is the kind of tradesperson you want on speed dial, honest, calm under pressure, and genuinely helpful even before the job starts. Highly recommend.Posted on Google Keba MillsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mike at Family Wise Plumbing in short was great. I had an urgent need and he showed up promptly and resolved the issue. He even took the time to walk me through some know how in terms of plumbing. I will be keeping his info for future needs and would recommend to anyone who asks. Price was also great. Thank you Mike.Posted on Google pall98Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mike was great, super nice guy, came on short notice and was very knowledgeable and honest. Family Wise Plumbing and Drain Cleaning repaired a leak on the outside water tap and a leak in the cold water line in the basement. Mike was friendly, professional and gave us the best price possible. The repair was done promptly and efficently. Mike even helped set up and install a water timer I had purchased. The cost was very reasonable compared to quotes from other companies. We would definitely recommend Mike for your future plumbing and drain issues.Posted on Google ed jTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Came out and assessed the issue and fixed the clog. I had a fantastic experience with Mike from Family Wise Plumbing, and would highly recommend him for any of your plumbing needs. My sewer mainline was backed up, and after I had no success trying to auger it myself I called Mike for help. He was super friendly while asking questions regarding my issue and very accommodating with scheduling an appointment. Mike showed up on time and got right to work; but not before taking a quick look at the work area, helping me clear out some items obstructing access, assisting with cleaning up some water that had flooded the washroom, and even giving my girlfriend a hand sweeping snow off her vehicle. Mike went to town augering the sewer line, all while explaining to me the possible causes for a back-up and potential ways to remediate any issues. He answered all the questions I had and even offered advice for solving any possible plumbing snags with things he spotted in the basement that weren't even related to the task at hand. Mike was always updating me when/why he would switch auger heads, and when he felt he had dislodged the potential blockage. He was very respectful of me, my home, and my pets while he worked; taking care to prevent any damage and clean up as he worked. Mike got my sewer line flowing again, and after making sure it was functioning properly he charged me exactly what was quoted. No silly fees or attempts to upsell me at all. If you require a friendly, diligent, and honest plumber look no further and give Family Wise a call. I am extremely happy with the service provided, and I am confident you will be too. Thank you so much for everything Mike! (If anybody asks please tell them I at least loosened the blockage for you with my failed attempt.)Posted on Google Drey PTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Mike on kijiji and I couldn't be more happy. He has to be one of the most genuine and friendly guys i have ever met. My cats loved him and probably held up the job getting in the way. When it came to the job he was extremely knowledgeable and skillful in everything he did. Our house was build in the late 60s and some of the plumbing is not the best but he fixed all the issues the came up. I now have a plumber that I will call for anything and everything. He is not like the huge plumbing outfits and you will not regret using him for any job.Posted on Google Melissa SteinkeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Early January I had a leak in my water line from my humidifier and this happened at 11:30 at night when I noticed . Not fun. I don’t have a regular plumbing place either. I haven’t found one reliable or reasonable or where they don’t try to sell me a membership I don’t want. I tried calling a few companies at midnight but had to leave messages or was told they weren’t sure when someone would come so I decided to watch it all night with a bucket under and call first thing in morning to someone for help at 7 am when places opened. One place said they could come the next day. It couldn’t wait that long. I found out later I was talking to an AI voice and not a human at another place. When you have a water leak and have no idea about plumbing that could cause major damage and insurance might have to get involved you need someone urgent not the next day ! Finally I saw Family Wise online and I called but had to leave a message. This was after calling 3 others. To my surprise the owner Mike called back right away and said he could come at 11:30. He found where the leak was and fixed it and his charge was very reasonable compared to others . He even looked at my one toilet and fixed my faucets in another bathroom . He went over and above for the price he charged with no upfront cost just to come out like others do. He was very polite and friendly. I would definitely recommend him.

FAQs About Basement Plumbing in Edmonton
What basement plumbing services do you provide?
Family Wise Plumbing can help with basement bathrooms, toilets, sinks, showers, laundry connections, utility sinks, floor drains, water-supply pipes, drainage lines, shutoff valves, sump pumps, leaks, repairs, and new plumbing installations.
Why is my basement floor drain backing up?
A floor drain may back up because of hair, soap, sediment, debris, a dry or blocked trap, or an obstruction farther along the main drainage or sewer line. Multiple affected fixtures may indicate a deeper blockage.
Why does my basement smell like sewage?
A basement sewer smell may come from a dry floor-drain trap, blocked drain, damaged pipe, loose connection, sewer backup, or another drainage problem. The source should be inspected before the smell becomes worse.
Can a plumber install a basement bathroom?
Yes. Basement bathroom plumbing may include water-supply lines, drainage pipes, venting, fixture connections, shutoff valves, and plumbing for the toilet, sink, shower, or bathtub. The existing setup should be assessed before work begins.
Can you connect plumbing for a basement laundry room?
Yes. A basement laundry area may require hot and cold water lines, shutoff valves, a washing machine drain, standpipe, and utility sink connections. The installation must match the existing plumbing layout and drainage system.
What should I do if water is coming through a basement drain?
Stop using plumbing fixtures when possible and call a plumber. Water returning through a basement floor drain may indicate a main drain or sewer blockage that requires prompt inspection.
Do I need a sump pump in my basement?
A sump pump may be useful where groundwater or drainage water collects in a sump pit. The need depends on the property design, existing drainage system, moisture history, and basement conditions.
Can you inspect existing basement plumbing rough-ins?
Yes. Existing rough-in pipes and connections should be reviewed before installing new fixtures. Their location, condition, sizing, and compatibility with the planned basement layout may affect the project.
Should plumbing be completed before finishing a basement?
